Mode of Transfer

The FTP (File Transfer) Service of our Student Web Server (w2.smcc-canossian.org) has been upgraded to accommodate more concurrent users. From now on, the FTP protocol supports only PASSIVE mode. This new arrangement affects all student web/FTP accounts and the RBL accounts.

For that reason, you need to choose PASSIVE mode in your application software for all FTP file uploading and downloading between your workstation and the Student Web Server (your file folder at w2.smcc-canossian.org).

The major steps in selecting PASSIVE mode in two commonly-used software are as follows.

 I. Internet Explorer 6.0 (IE 6.0)
IE supports both active and passive FTP modes. You can configure it for passive mode by the following steps.
1. Open IE, go to
Tools | Internet Options and click the Advanced tab.
2. Place a
check beside the option Use Passive FTP.
3. Place a
check beside the option Enable Folder View For FTP Sites.
4. Click
OK.
An important point to understand is that when you disable folder view, IE 6.0 operates in active mode regardless of the state of the Use Passive FTP option. You must turn on folder view to use passive mode in IE 6.0.

II. Dreamweaver
1. For each
Defined Site with w2.smcc-canossian.org, go to Remote Info category and select Use Passive FTP.
2. Click
OK.
